#87 - Quick update: "What is your name?"

Vol.# 87

It was a bit dicey at first when I was asked in Khmer, “What is your name?”
I gave the teacher a blank look! Then she repeated, and I went OH
I could not remember one vocab word but I got comprehension: fluency was very good etc.

I had started the morning with an upset stomach. I ate bad food yesterday, the one time I chose to eat out for lunch since I was going to be at school all day! So I had no breakfast and I went in feeling queasy!

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement
I will go back on Monday to visit the school and give Christmas goodies to the teachers! And then we are off for 3 weeks!

Praise: I had prayed and asked God for the landlady to be around a couple of days ago so that I can ask her to practise Khmer with me. She had not been around, and her husband kept saying you two should get together! I did see her, and she came up for an hour to practise with me! She stopped when she saw the walls covered in Khmer and started to smile! She loves my Christmas tree, so I will look for more decorations later and also for gifts for her and her family. They are not yet believers!

Now I am off to sleep since have been up since 3 a.m.!

#86 - Oops! Exam date change! Lunch date or 3-day stint?

Vol.# 86

There is a correction to my exam date!

Since we have six students in the class and 45 minutes to one hour for each, and the class is in the morning, the exam will be spread over 2 days! So instead of the 18th, my exam is on the morning of the 17th! We are one day ahead here, so it will be on your 16th!l

We got a break down of the test today; it is in 6 parts, going from pronunciation and recognition of pictures (vocab), to conversation (basic questions), to listening texts, and answering questions from the listening texts!

You know you need extra help from above when…
I was asking someone to go for lunch (in Khmer), but instead I asked to go with me for 3 days! The word lunch and three days can sound alike!
I was wondering why I got a special smile!
Well it’s a whole new way of breaking down barriers! Lol!

Pastor Sam has another story about me on that one!

We were doing descriptive words such as kind, funny etc., and can you guess which word was used to describe me?
NO! Not crazy, but rather, friendly and funny!

Yup, if I go around asking people to go with me for 3 days that would be very, very friendly!

I am blessed to have you all pray for me. One person said that my pronunciation was so much better, and that was from a classmate! Yes, pride has to go and I just have to keep on practising!

Thank you all for your encouragement!

#85 - Language learning, travelling mercies, A/C, and my Christmas tree!

Vol.# 85

Life in Cambodia
I sit between two fans trying to get relief from the heat in my living room/study area. You would think it would be cooler at 6:23 at night, but, alas, no breeze!

I had to close the door due to my good friends, the mosquitoes, which love to come and visit me! Unfortunately, even drenched in repellent, I am still bitten!

I can hear the sounds of dinner being prepared, the pounding of meat so that it can be ready to cook, and the dogs are barking!

Language learning:
Yesterday was a discouraging day in class. We had blanks to fill in with sentences, and then had a listening comprehension class. I understood 10% and was able to do the sentences, but not as fast as half of the class! I also had to make the hour and a bit tuk tuk ride to my bank in the village in Bek Chan close to Rescue! However, I did not have the time to go there, I was rushing from my morning classes to go and return!

Praise:
Even though it was a discouraging day, I want to thank you for your prayers! I am not sure how you prayed but the ‘hard’ day just made me more determined to study!

So on the tuk tuk ride to Bek Chan, I had my headphones on listening to the Khmer vocabulary pronunciation! My tuk tuk driver kept thinking I was talking to him and kept turning around which really was not safe! I had to stop to get a mask for the dust and smells that accelerated as we moved from one area to the other!
Going to class outing
The ride was a reminder of how HE took care of me so many times when I made that journey! I kept thinking, how did I do it for over one year? For two months I journeyed twice a day back and forth from Rescue! I could hear His voice say, I will always give you what you need when you obey me my child!

So, may I encourage you who are maybe having a rough time leading up to Christmas?
Go to Him, lay down your burdens and read His Word. He is just waiting for you to come to Him.

When I got back home after the over two hour journey, I spent 3 hours writing the words on my wall and listening to more texts and then saying some of the words and sending via WhatsUp App to my two Khmer friends, Channak and Dong, to correct my pronunciation!

Prayer:  My first major test is on the 18th! It is on vocabulary recognition, conversation and answering questions in Khmer. The tests are for two days and you have to sign up for your time. I decided to be the first, so on the 18th my test is at 8:30 in the morning. I covet your prayers not only on that day, but also from now as I study and engage others in conversation! I have my extra tutorial session tomorrow so I will work on my listening skills!

Prayer: I still do not have a dining room table or couch. You have to really double think about how to get things delivered and then up the narrow stairs or by pulley from the street! Pray for wisdom as I still have to make this room ‘more home-like!' I have A/C in my bedroom but I do not want people congregating there. It is my ‘refuge’ in my ‘refuge!’

Many of you have asked to see my Christmas tree so I am sending you a pic!

It was a lot of fun to see one of the Khmer couples from my church put it up and begin to decorate! It is so much more fun to see others having so much delight in doing something! They themselves cannot afford a tree so my place will become the Christmas drop-in place!

The fans are still circulating hot air so I am trying to negotiate for an A/C for this living/study/eating room! I had to put a strip of rubber at the bottom of the door so the air would not escape, but also to bring down the costs of using the A/C. One of my friends here spent time in sticking the rubber with cement glue. Since the door is made of iron we could not staple or nail the rubber to the door! I want to make sure I keep costs down, so after a month or so I am getting a true idea of the cost of living here!
Before: Gluing the rubber to keep air in

After: Prayerfully will keep air in and costs down!

Prison Fellowship: Acting on excellent advice from one of my prayer supporters, I looked into material already devised by PF from around the world. However they are quite busy this month with the government meetings, so we will meet again next month. I will be sending the Curriculum Director the links of material that can be used!

My tuk tuk driver has been more talkative, and yes, is still is on a mission to get me to school in 10 minutes or under! The traffic is really very bad, so I never know which route he is going to take! However, yesterday we had so many ‘close’ calls, I am very grateful that I pray before we leave my place!

Keep sending me your pics of your festivities!
I miss hearing the Christmas music and advent leading up to Christmas! I think I miss having a television now. Besides listening to local news, I can usually get CNN or BBC news! I will let you know what I am doing for Christmas! There is talk of hunting down a turkey!
We will see what happens!

My love to you all! I have to go and put on more repellent and make dinner!

I am singing, “Oh, the weather outside is frightful….“
AH! MY Jesus chose to leave His kingly place to come down for us, for you, for me.

Your servant, Vidya

#84 - Persevering Prayer for a Brain Sound Switch!

Vol.# 84

Daniel 1:17: “...As for Vidya [Daniel], God gave her learning and skill in all literature and wisdom and Vidya [Daniel] had understanding in all..."

Psalm 119:73: “...Your hands have made me and fashioned me, give me understanding that I may learn your commandments...”

As I read the above in my morning coffee time with Jesus, and I wrote the words in my journal and on my wall in the living room/study, I claimed the promise in those words, and as you, my extended family, prayed and sent your words of encouragement and advice, I actually did a little dance in expectation of the dreaded phonics hour!

Praise God: I got the tutor that I wanted. Her name is Lita and she is quite good at teaching and being patient, and she knows words in English to draw out the correct pronunciation from me!

Prayer: This will be what you would define as 'persevering prayer": I need to get that switch on my brain which would show me how to place my tongue and do the sounds. I got a couple of the sounds but to be fair, I already had that down pat! It is amazing how fast one hour can go as you are learning a few sounds!

Prayer: Shall I do this twice a week or three times? My first test is on the 18th just before the Christmas break. It is a long day. I am up by or before 6:00am, finish at 12:00pm, have to eat lunch and hang around school until 1:30pm and then get home by 2:45pm after class at 2:30pm. Yesterday I was exhausted so I just came and gratefully put on my a/c to nap!

Praise: I met with (PF) Prison Fellowship (finally!) and after two meetings, the second of which Mr. Rithy, the Program Director, says to me, “Introduce yourself.” I was able to do it in Khmer! Then he introduced himself and we were able to converse in ...English! Lol!

Prayer: PF would like me to create a curriculum that can be used by the pastors who go into the prisons. This would then be translated into Khmer. This would take a lot of time and my priority is learning the language and then practising it!  Pray for wisdom. I take curriculum like this very seriously. It has to be drenched in His Holy Spirit to come alive so that when the prisoner hears it, he sees himself and then God's grace and power and the transformation that can happen through only Jesus Christ. If anyone of you has access to any 'work' that may help, please send along my way! I used to do "Bad Girls from the Bible' with the girls at Drop In Centre long ago! The idea is to highlight figures from the Bible and then create a story and then questions, which would start the communication process between the pastor and prisoner!

Thank you, thank you to you who prayed for me, and responded to tell me that you were praying. I was drawn to tears and, yes, it was encouraging and gave me that extra 'energy' to go to class!

Please keep sending me your prayer requests and allowing me the honor to be part of your lives from here!

I would invite you to dance with me by checking out my financial support sheet (Email me). If you feel prompted by the Holy Spirit to join, thank you!

Got to run now, time to get ready for my day! My moto driver has suddenly become very friendly and asks questions in English, and I ask him how to say certain words in Khmer. I think I amuse him! But I think he thinks it is his mission to get me to school in 10 minutes or less! The traffic is at its worst at the time I leave, so we go in and out and on sidewalks etc. I love it!
