#180 - Toronto: The V Has Landed!

Vol.# 180

The V has landed in Toronto! I came in last night and want to say thank you for prayers for safe travels.

It is now 4:30am. I have been up since 4am and I did some exercises in my room, had my devotions and chose a couple of verses that I read in my Khmer Bible to send to my sister Bopha back in Phnom Penh.
All is quiet. I love it

Praise
My housemate helped me to weigh my suitcases and each one was 3kg over! I had just spoken to one of the pastors from New Life church in Phnom Penh, who with her family had just returned from the U.S.A.  They had been charged for each kilo that they were over the weight allowance given to them. So with that warning in mind as I went to the Cathay Pacific airlines, I was worried about the charges I might incur! However, the lady there was so nice, chatting with me and did not even blink an eye at the weight! It was then I noticed that I was at the Business/First class counter, not the Economy where I should have been! I had just walked to the first counter I saw where there was no line. For those of you who are wondering, I still sat in Economy class.

Thank you to my housemate for helping to carry my 2 heavy suitcases down the stairs and staying with me until it was time to board.
Transition in Hong Kong was smooth though the ride was a bit bumpy at times on the 15-hour flight from Hong Kong to Toronto.

As expected, sleep did not come easy on the flight, and the two men I sat next to snored for the whole flight here! But 15 hours did not seem to be that long, so thank you for your prayers

On arrival here, when I got to the kiosk at Customs, I was praying that my electronic check-in into Pearson would go smoothly since the customs attendant who was directing us to each kiosk was a bit grumpy! Well, the computer could not ‘read’ my passport, and then when it was time to take the photo, it kept saying ‘cannot take photo’! Now I am having a picture in my mind of Customs hauling me off because nothing was working. So I eventually called the agent who somehow miraculously was not grumpy when she helped me! She said ‘no worries about the picture’ and then afterwards it was all smooth sailing!

Praise
I had asked you to pray for the Asean Christian Conference. I was wrong about the numbers. There were over 2500 people who attended the conference! They had to bring in more chairs and are already thinking of a bigger venue for next year. I was hesitant at first about the prayer time during and after each service. It was overwhelming with so many coming up for prayer, 99 percent all Khmer! I am still trying to debrief that experience in my quiet time with God!

ACC Prayer Team 2018

Praise:
I love walking in the cool air, with no sounds of construction and busyness here this morning. God provided angels who helped me this morning. The first was the maintenance guy at my parents’ place. I was doing laundry but could not get the washing machine to work with the card. The guy noticed I was having trouble and came to help. The second one was at Walmart. I could not find the shampoo I needed, so I asked one of the workers and the next thing I knew I had 3 ladies there helping me look for it! Then I went to the library to renew my card, and naturally, I realized I did not have the old card with me, but the librarian there was so helpful. I got to hear her story about when she grew up in China and only read academic books when required for her studies, and now here she loves reading (I may have been too enthusiastic about being in a library and having access to so many books which initiated our conversation!). She renewed my card online and I was allowed to take out books. Today I will return with old card to give to her.

I am looking forward to seeing you all and hearing your stories as well
However, you know you are not ready to meet with people when…
- You hear the ‘ping’ that the microwave is finished but you go to open the fridge door instead and wonder where your food is…
- At Walmart when the ladies there were trying to decide which shampoo I needed to match the color of my hair, and there was no agreement: brown, ash grey, red? And I start to laugh and cannot stop…
- When you go to the sink and just want to drink the water from the tap…
- You stand in the middle of sidewalk just inhaling the fresh cool air and everyone has to walk around you!

I am enjoying spending this week with my Dad and bonding over watching cricket as my mom is in Trinidad, even though I am falling asleep during the game! I am looking forward to spending time with my two brothers and my sis as well, and yes, eating some good Trini food!

I just have to say special congrats to my nephew, Nathan, on his engagement to Sarah!!!!!!!
Yay!!!!!! Proud and so happy for you both!

#179 - Please Pray

Vol.# 179

Prayer Requests:

Please pray as I am heading into a very hectic 4 days at our Asean Christian Conference in Phnom Penh. An estimated one thousand will attend the conference over the next few days, coming in from all corners of Cambodia as well as from neighbouring countries.  My day will begin from 5:45 a.m. The conference begins at 8, and those of us volunteering at the information desk have to be on site at 6:30. I do have breaks in between and the shift ends at 12:30 lunchtime. I am then on altar call prayer at the end of group worship time from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Please pray for a fresh outpouring of His Spirit over me.  Before I can pray and serve others here, I need to be refreshed and alert as I pray with and over others.
Some of team with access bands

Pray for the weather. It has been raining everyday around 4:30 onwards, but sometimes it rains early in the morning as well. I am praying that the clouds part and the sun shines so that all who are coming will be able to get here safely and will come and not be deterred by the rain!

Some of my students from English class I have been teaching will attend, so please pray for eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts to be opened for those who do not yet know about Jesus the Christ!

Pray for good conversations amongst my team, and that my Khmer will be good enough to understand all the different ‘sounds’ from those coming in from the province areas. Pray that HE will give me discernment as I meet and talk and help those who are coming to the conference

The conference finishes on the Sunday night and then I have Monday to wash clothes, pack and get things ready here at the house before I head out to you in Toronto on Tuesday morning!

Thank you so much for your prayers

#178 - Esther, a Wedding, and a Countdown!

Vol.# 178

Bong, I was thinking of you as I wiped my baby’s bottom!”
That was the beginning of a conversation with Bopha, my Khmer sister here, with whom I have been helping with English using our daily reading from the Bible. So I was not sure how that sentence was going to finish!
So wisely, not guessing her meaning, I asked, “Ahh, why were you thinking of me, Oune Srey (younger sister)?”
She responded, “I was thinking of how you said that reading the Bible can be fun, and it is the voice of God, and I found out that I can ‘hear’ the Bible through my Ipad! I can do my work and listen to the Bible at the same time!”
So I said to her, “My skin is not as soft as the baby’s bum?”
She said, “What?”
Yes, sometimes jokes cannot be explained, so we moved on to more spiritual talk!

But oh, how happy I was to hear her say this. We had just finished reading Esther and she was so excited that we read the whole story in one sitting. I had picked through some verses to give her the background. Esther, like her, had lost her parents and she came from a disadvantaged background but she was not lost to God. God had a plan for Esther but she had to obey her uncle Mordecai’s instructions. Bopha was so happy to read the story in Khmer first and then in English. She noted that Esther had to prepare for ONE year before she even went in to see the king! So Bopha said to me, “Esther was young yet she was brave. and even if we are young God can still use us, use me, and guess what, Bong Srey? In Timothy God also talks about not despising the youth!”
Wow! I had ‘goose bumps’ all over my arm!
And to think I might have said yes to teaching one other class from 5:30 to 6:30 in the evenings (my other class finishes at 5) because there was a need, but I knew that teaching that particular class was not in my gifts, and I would have been just ‘filling’ in and not teaching it with joy and worship to Our God!

Yesterday, one of the other workers from the coffee bar at the church (Yes, I used bar and church together!) came and sat and listened to us as he pretended to play on his phone! This particular young man does not speak much. Something is wrong with his vocal chords so his voice is high and soft at the same time, but as I shared some food with him two days ago, he seems to have ‘warmed’ up to me! OR, it could be because I was dancing at a wedding to Khmer songs last weekend!

Wedding Prep With Bopha and Srey Luch

Bopha and I at Wedding
Meychen, a beautiful woman leader got married to her Sokheang, an amazing Christian leader as well. It has been my honor to get to know Meychen as I volunteered at the church, and later when I began to teach English classes, I got to know Sokheang! Last weekend we celebrated their wedding and I had tears of joy as I witnessed how they washed each other’s feet as a sign of serving and humbling themselves with each other, and then consecutively washing his parents’ feet and then her parents’ feet, saying thank you to both for their sacrifices on their behalf. The wedding was in Khmer so I am sure I missed out a lot in the vows but my pastor’s wife was in tears and laughter as well as her husband, Pastor Jesse! Since the wedding a lot of the staff have come up to me randomly to say, “’Bong’, we enjoyed you dancing with us and having fun with us at the wedding!” People who had never talked to me before have been approaching me just to say, Bong, so glad you came to the wedding and dressed up too!”

Prayer Requests:

- Pray that all of the little details will get done before I leave.

     - We have the upcoming ASEAN Christian Conference from 13-16th of September. The theme is ‘Unshakeable”, so I ask for prayer for safe travels for all of the pastors and congregation coming in from all parts of Cambodia and also the speakers who will be travelling to Cambodia; and for the Word to sink in and to grow the faith of all of us there!

     - Pray for energy and wisdom as I am on the Info/Welcome team. My shift is from 6:30 to 12 noon with breaks in between. Then I am on the English-speaking prayer team for altar call/ prayer needs in the evening when the third session ends. Pray for discernment and wisdom as I wait to hear the Holy Spirit’s leading before praying with someone.

Two days ago, David and Janice Haskell came here, and I had the privilege of having Janice as my ‘guest’ teacher in my class. Janice responded to one of my student’s questions on life advice and talked about negative and positive influences. I asked each student to stand and say one positive thing about themselves, and as each stood and spoke I wrote the attribute on the board and I was touched to hear why they thought they had that particular attribute. For example, one said back in her village her community there told her mother that she should stop her daughter (my student) from going to school, that she would not do well, but her mother encouraged her to pursue her studies, and now this student not only goes to university in the evenings, but she also has a day job! So perseverancewas one of her attributes!
SO blessed to spend time with my sister Janice and bro David! It was a short time as they returned two days after!

Janice in Class - Freestyle :)

Janice in Class - Normal!

SO LET THE COUNTDOWN BEGIN TO TOUCHDOWN TO TORONTO on September 18th, NOT the 14th as I had previously stated. I pray that I will get a chance to meet all of you! We can set up ‘date’ times together, and I want to hear ALL about you and how I can rejoice, pray and just ‘be’ with you all!

As I leave you I am playing …not your typical worship songs, but the one and the only Miss Aretha Franklin in the background, ‘I Say A Little Prayer For You’ followed up by ‘RESPECT’. I am playing all her songs and dancing as I remember Miss Aretha and the wonderful memories dating back to my childhood in Trinidad! I miss not having those familiar with her music here, so I cannot wait to sing and dance some AF songs when I return with you all! YES, YOU

#177 - The Khmer journey in learning and teaching continues

Vol.# 177

Elections are over and there was calm in the city. Many had gone to their hometown to vote, so for once there was no traffic jam in Phnom Penh! As I sit here in my living room listening to the sounds of construction and the businesses nearby, I am grateful for your prayers for my heart country.

As I mentioned before in my last update, I am teaching an ‘open’ English class, meaning the literacy levels of the students vary from a beginner to intermediate level of understanding. I may have new students who drop in for a class if they are free, so there is a ‘revolving’ door of students.

However, in the midst of this, I have a core group of 12 students who come regularly to class, so I am able to build relationships with this core group. They come early just to chat because most have to rush off to university classes after, or to the next class located in the church but they need to eat before the next class!

I spoke of a young girl who works at the information desk in the afternoons but cannot go to English class so I decided to help her after my class at 5. I asked her to pick one verse from her Bible reading that she would have read in Khmer, and I would pick one Bible verse from my daily reading that would have been in English. When we got together, I would read my verse in Khmer from the Khmer Bible on my IPad and she would read her one verse in English. I would then write my verse in Khmer, and she would write hers in English, and then we respectively read it to each other and then tried to explain the verse in the language we are learning!

I thought she would have forgotten that we had decided to do this since we made the plans before the 3-day break, but she was ready with her verse. It was so cool that she wanted to read at least 4 more verses in English and then discuss what it meant, and how sometimes in Khmer translation, the meaning of the verse is not always the same as in the English Bible!
Bopha and the Khmer teacher I am helping

I was asked to come in at 12 to meet with another Khmer teacher to act as his ‘resource’ in helping him to understand some of the phrases and content of the comprehension exercises he is preparing for his class. I have said yes to help and he has also been helping me to translate into Khmer some of the grammar instructions. Meanwhile, I am still meeting with my Khmer tutor early in the mornings for about an hour to hour and a half.

Praise

Thank you for praying for tutor #1 (Teacher Keriya) who had surgery. I had spoken to her the day after on the phone and she was recuperating well. I will go to visit her with tutor #2 (Teacher Rady) when she is able to have visitors.

Prayer Requests

- Please continue to pray for Bopha whom I am helping after my classes, that she would not get discouraged by her lack of time to learn English, but that she would be surprised by how God is opening up her ears and eyes and mind to learn English! (Using Prov. 20:12 to show her that God gives us eyes and ears to hear not only English but His voice.)

- Please pray for a new place for my parents in Toronto! Still looking for better place for them to live!

Praise

I have had the same tuk tuk driver consecutively 3 times
to take me from teaching to home, and the conversation is always in Khmer! It is funny because driver is talking away, facing forward, so his voice is lost in the sounds of the traffic and I have to always bend forward to catch what he is saying or asking! But I am glad to have this ‘extra’ time of listening, even though I probably hear and understand 40 percent!

I am looking forward  to seeing you all in person from September 14th

#176 - The God of Little Details

Vol.# 176

As I walk into the darkened church, I can just make out the outline of a woman standing next to the tithe box, and I observed how she was about to give her tithe. She clasped her hands and prayed with head bowed; then she raised her head upwards as if to God before inserting the envelope into the slot.
I was truly moved by her actions. I thought, what reverence she possesses. She really and truly is presenting her offering to the LORD. It was an act of worship and release to Him Who gave it to her in the first place.
This encounter was a timely reminder to me as I was about to do the same but with a totally different attitude! I had given myself 2 minutes to run in and do my duty of giving my tithe before I had to rush out again to another errand. I have become so cavalier in my giving back to Jesus, and this encounter made me pause to think.

Am I giving with the right attitude of mind and spirit?

I think that my Khmer brothers and sisters here have so much to teach me when it comes to totally surrendering all that I have, albeit resources, time or relationships to Jesus the Christ!

Last week I had to have another talk with my Khmer helper about cleaning properly. I had this talk with my Khmer tutor alongside me. Keo, my helper, took it to heart and decided to take apart the fan to clean it because it was dirty! Well, she was so vigorous in the cleaning that a vital part of the fan, a very small circular ‘thing’ broke! Without this piece she could not put back the moving parts of the fan that makes up the fan! I just looked at her when she said, Bong Srey (older sister), sorry

It was VERY VERY hot last week, to say the least, and I thought most places may not sell this piece apart from buying a whole new fan. So with a heavy heart, 3 days ago as my tuk tuk driver came to meet me, I showed him the broken piece and told him that I was going to pray that I would be able to find this piece. So he bowed his head with me as I prayed. Well, wouldn’t you know it, just 2 minutes down the road, at the side of someone's house where the garbage is usually kept for pick up, there was this missing piece! My driver stopped and went to pick it up to show me, and I could not believe it!
It was just there

Well, we looked at each other and I started to laugh and say, "Well now, we have to give thanks to God!"
OH VIDYA of little faith
God allowed me to call this particular driver that morning (usually I would use an app on my phone to get my rides because it is cheaper this way), so that I could share with him my prayer, and then for him to spot this piece lying on the side of the road!
I hope this encourages you, because it just reminded me of His promise to always take care of me even in the smallest of things!
So sweet that He would do that, not only for me, but for my driver and also Keo, my helper! (I told her the story about praying and God showing us the missing piece and it was free! LOL!)

I would like to send pictures of my class to you, but I first have to get permission, so in my next update I will just send pictures, no words!
I love my class. I decided to be 'strict' because there were too many in the class. It went from 20 to 33, so I had a game plan. I laid down rules that the Khmer interpreted as being too strict, and now I am back to the manageable 22 students! The class is an open class, meaning I have students with different comprehension levels of English, so it can be difficult teaching a lesson with such a varied standard of understanding.
'Strict' to my Khmer students means that they have to come to class on time. Pov, the head of the English programme, and I had a different understanding of ‘grace’ time to go to class; I was thinking 5 minutes and he was thinking 15 minutes! Phones are not to be used; they are not 'best friends' in class, meaning they cannot ‘help’ each other by giving each other the answer etc.. I had to explain why I thought it was important (then I would not know how to help the student etc.); no talking while I was teaching; and then when we spoke it would be in English!

I figured some of the students were not really serious about being in class, so I wanted to see who would come to class. So now I have a core group! One student came to ask permission to be late since she leaves work at 4 and the class starts at 4 and I gave her permission because she came to ask me permission.  I do use Khmer to explain grammar and certain words which has more than one meaning in English. For example, we were talking about the phrase ‘breaking a promise’, so I had to explain the difference between breaking a glass, heartbreaking etc..

But the thing I love is what happens on my way to teaching the class. I meet with a Khmer teacher that I wrote about in my previous updates, just to listen and explain phrases in his English lesson. I like the impromptu chats with other Khmer staff who are teaching English, and how just talking with them gives me ideas on how to explain English grammar within the Khmer experience! Prepping my lessons is becoming more and more like an act of worship as HE gives the creativity in ideas and how to teach the class.

Praise

Thank you for praying for me to be more creative in the class; to find the balance of being ‘strict’ yet welcoming; the delicate balance of being a teacher and educator.

Prayer Requests

My tutor is the same as Matt's when he came 16 years ago!
- My tutor is having an operation. Can you please pray for quick healing and no infection for her? She trusts in God, but her son is young in the faith, so I am praying that he sees how God can truly care for his mom by her quick recovery and smooth operation.

- Elections is on July 29th. Please pray for peace and order before the elections and afterwards.

Thank you all
Please keep sending your stories and your prayer requests as it is an honor for you to include me in going to God on your behalf!

#175 - Village or City?

Vol.# 175

Hello all from ...not a sweltering room, but gasp...an air-conditioned space, since I am in a coffee shop! In my last update, I had asked you to pray for me and here are the answers!

- I met with the head of the English program at the main church campus for lunch and decided to stay for both the 4 o’clock and then the 6 o’clock English classes.
Lunch with Pov to Discuss English Classes

The first class had 20 students with English literacy levels ranging from level 2 to a level 4 in literacy comprehension. I wanted to observe how the head of the program who was substituting for the regular teacher taught this class. The second class had 60 students! I kid you not

I sat behind and wondered how some of the students were learning because some of them could not understand simple instructions. There were also those who were bored. I knew this because they were not taking notes; they understood everything and had good recall when I asked them questions. There was one particular student who caught my attention. His spectacles were quite thick and he had to hold the paper very close to his eyes, and his friend kept whispering to him to let him know what was written on the board. He kept leaning forward as he strained to listen and learn. Then there were other students who did not understand what was going on, so they kept whispering or looking at their classmate’s work!

But they were all at attention when Pov, the head of the program there, began to share his testimony and the reasons he studied English. He had to share in Khmer and English, mostly in Khmer for them to understand, and I for one was riveted by his testimony! His father died when he was 4, his family had no money and he was mostly on his own, so he became a gangster and made some bad choices in his life. Then one day he heard about the free English classes at the church and decided he wanted to have a better life. So he learnt English so that he could get a ‘legal’ job so that he could earn money to get out of his poor situation. His life circumstances began to change little by little. He said that he became a believer through going to the church to learn English. He now turns to God when he has problems so that he would not make bad life choices.
Education was his way out of not only physical poverty but also spiritual and emotional poverty!

- I had asked requested prayer for when I went out to the village area.
First of all, I did not realize how far it was going to be. It was further than when I worked at Bek Chan Place of Rescue orphanage. It took one and a half hours by car because of the traffic and man, was it ever hot

Village Pastor’s Wife and Son with Sister Rotha, Leader from Main Church

Birthday Celebration with Youth at Country Church

But when we got to the first church where they were having a Youth Outreach night, it was awesome! They played games and then had a mini concert of songs followed by a short talk by the leader whom I was accompanying from the main campus. Sister Rotha, the leader, will be staying there for 3 months to help the pastor and his wife at this location because there are 3 churches in the area that are satellite plants of the main church. We stayed at a guesthouse for the night where the cockroaches and I had a war going on. We 3 women stayed in one room, and guess which bed the cockroaches decided to play on? Yes, my own! Sigh

The next morning we got up early to get coffee and then off to church. This church reminded me of a church my parents pastored back in Trinidad (Las Lomas Evangelical church). It was small with about 25 adults, 8 small kids and the worship team was comprised of 4 of the youth from the previous night. Man
A flood of memories came back especially when I went outside to a small shed in the back where the kids were on the floor with crayons and paper colouring and drawing their stories! I remember teaching a class like that back home! I remember being a part of a class like that myself! Even though it was sweltering (the fans were circulating hot air), tears were rolling down my face as I felt this was ‘holy ground’!

At the end the pastor asked us to pray with members of the congregation who needed prayer and they all went up. This congregation was comprised of many older women and as I prayed with one particular older lady, these words kept coming to mind: Do not worry! God hears you! You have remained faithful to Him even though you have many problems. But do not worry!  So I said these words to her, and she started to cry and held out her hands and then held my face!

Women’s Group at Second Church

Then it was time to go and have lunch and get ready for the Sunday school class at 4, followed by the evening service at the first church at 6. After lunch we went to the church and hung out with some of the youth there playing UNO! Who knew that UNO could be so competitive and addictive? It was fun.
With youth and American couple; can you find me?

Then the couple who took me there shared some lessons about forgiveness and how to have healthy relationships. This couple is from States and they speak Khmer fluently enough to already bond with the congregation there. They know this is where God is planting them. Then at 8 at night we made the trip back to the city, and this time it was a shorter journey back with cooler temperatures and it only took about 45 minutes!

- Results from trip to the province
I had prayed and asked God to show me if it was in the countryside I needed to be or back here in the city. It would be so easy to follow one’s emotions when you go on site and see how much help is needed at certain sites, especially when you ‘bond’ with the people you meet and they all say we want you here to help. But that is also the danger. I have recognized the fact that my specific top giftings or skills are relational and more than one of my ‘mentors’ have so wisely advised me this way, “Vidya, your relational skills have been given to you by God. They can always be applied to any place you go, so you must always pray into situations to see if that is where you are to be planted. Secondly look at the whole picture. Are the living conditions conducive for the long run? A visit or three days is just a snapshot of the whole movie of His plan, so make sure that you are able to give one hundred percent of yourself to any particular situation without having your energies being drained by other factors. Do not be a negative factor for the people you are serving. The focus should be on you being a servant to those around you, and NOT them serving you because you are not physically or emotionally fit to serve!
Wise words indeed!

One picture that kept coming back to me even when I was out in the countryside was the one of that student with the thick glasses who could barely see, whose parents are sacrificing to have him at school in the city. They are not sacrificing money to pay for his education since it is provided free of charge by the church, but this son could be working and helping to contribute to the family’s income. However, the parents want a better future for all of them, and no, I am not using the wrong pronoun when I say ‘them’, for the son or daughter’s future is all about contributing to the whole family, not just solely for the individual concerned!

Prayer Request
As I keep serving in the areas discussed above, either as a consultant or main teacher (I would love to take out 20 specific students from the class of 60 to really invest in teaching) in a conversational English class in the city or in the countryside, would you pray that God would cement in my heart the specific location please? I already have an inkling but I want to meet with the chief Khmer pastor leader and his wife to share my concerns and ask for their advice. I want to make sure that my Western upbringing and perspectives on outcomes for educational classes do not taint my perspective, and of course I want to get their blessings! My Mission team back in RAC wisely suggested that I have partners here who really know me and under whom I am accountable. I am His servant first, and their servant secondly in my heart country here, and I want to serve not only passionately but wisely so that my spheres of influence are God-directed and impactful for His glory.

Snippets of my life here:
On Father’s Day at church, one of my students leaned over and whispered to me, “Sir, Happy Father’s Day!” I laughed and snorted out loud at same time! Not good, since it was in the middle of the church service!
On the way to church, the random tuk tuk driver that I called to take me there says to me after 3 minutes, “Bong Srey (older sister) are you a Christian?” I had no idea how he knew and no, I did not say any ‘christianese’ words like ‘bless you’ or ‘Praise the Lord you are driving well’! I just said yes and we began a conversation about his family and how his wife is too busy selling at the market to go to church, and I just felt I should give him 2 free tickets to the annual Asian Conference in September organized by my church here. It is special 3-day event where churches from all the provinces come together to listen to special speakers and worship together. They have been selling ticket for $2.50 each, but if you buy early you get one ticket free. So I had 6 tickets with me with the intention of giving them away. So I gave him 2 so that he and his wife can prepare to come for part of the conference or all of it in September.
At the coffee shop here, as soon as I walked in, the waitress said, “Apple scone, Bong Srey?” I was puzzled but then I remembered last time I came with the sole intention of eating that for breakfast and they did not have any. It was only 30 minutes after opening time and I thought to myself, ‘was I overly dramatic last time when I came in… ‘Cause how come she remembers me?’ SO sheepishly I said, okay yes, even though I had planned to eat something else. So I got it to go and then the manager came out and said, “Oh Bong, I saw you and immediately I told the girl, keep apple scone for Bong Srey”!  I smiled and said thank you and proceeded to be the gentlest of all customers ever! Yikes! Maybe I need to work more on the ‘fruit of the Spirit,’ ay?
Did I mention that the time in the countryside with the churches with the messages being preached was all in Khmer; even my prayer time there? I probably understood about 60 percent in the messages but I understood even less when the older women spoke to me, and that was one to one, because the language spoken is not as formal as the one I am accustomed to in the city, but actions speak louder than words, so communication was not as difficult as I thought it would be! But you do need that ‘space’ or ‘retreat’ after being immersed in the language for 2 days when you go home so that mentally you can be prepared to go back out and just focus on Khmer language.
In last session out in the countryside, we had to get into small groups and answer 3 specific questions based on the sermon given. So I answered the last question boldly with the words, “My pastors from back home and my prayer partners!” I was puzzled by the group members’ reactions until I realized I had misunderstood the question. I thought I was being asked about whom I go to for help when I am experiencing difficulty in particular situation. So I said pastors. However, the question was “Who do I need to ask forgiveness from for an unhealthy situation/Who do I need to say sorry TO for my unhealthy response to a situation!” Yup, maybe I understood even less than 60 percent! It was however an ice breaker, because we were all laughing a half hour later over my confident response and my group’s reaction to my answers.
The boat trip with my expat friends and language teachers from school went well even though it rained on the way and for the first 25 minutes.

My Posse! My Khmer teachers and Expat Bro and Sisters.

I had fun bonding with Baby Hosea. He was premature at birth, but wow, how God has answered prayers! He is so strong now and so cute!

It was wonderful to see that even though formal relationships as teacher and student have changed, we are still a family and these are the relationships I need to nurture and maintain in order to keep sharing His heart with those who only know of Him from afar!

Please keep on sending your snippets of life!
